Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health issues remain a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, where misconceptions, stigma, and a lack of awareness contribute to low rates of diagnosis and treatment (Ojo & Musa, 2023). Jos East Local Government Area in Plateau State is no exception, with many residents unaware of mental health conditions and how to manage them. In recent years, social media has emerged as a crucial platform for health awareness campaigns, providing an accessible means of communication for a wide audience (Bawa & Adepoju, 2024). Various health advocacy groups, mental health professionals, and NGOs are utilizing social media to educate the public about mental health, break down stigmas, and provide resources for individuals suffering from mental health disorders. This study aims to explore how social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, are being used to promote mental health awareness in Jos East. Social media’s potential for engaging the community, spreading knowledge, and providing emotional support is examined in this context, specifically regarding how these platforms influence individuals' attitudes toward mental health issues and encourage help-seeking behavior.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of social media, there is a lack of research exploring its effectiveness in promoting mental health awareness in rural and semi-urban areas like Jos East. Mental health remains a highly stigmatized issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Jos East, where the lack of mental health resources and the cultural stigma associated with mental illness hinder individuals from seeking help. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which social media is reshaping public perception of mental health, promoting awareness, and encouraging positive action in Jos East. The findings will help in understanding whether social media is indeed contributing to the reduction of stigma and the promotion of mental health resources.

1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in promoting the use of social media as a tool for mental health awareness in rural communities like Jos East. The findings will be valuable for mental health professionals, advocacy groups, and policymakers in designing social media-based interventions to improve mental health literacy and reduce stigma in similar regions across Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused on Jos East Local Government Area, Plateau State, and only examines the role of social media in mental health awareness. Limitations include the potential for response bias and the focus on social media platforms, which may exclude other important forms of mental health communication.
